Captain Richard Phillips, portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 2013 film "Captain Phillips," is a real person who was the captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, a cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. Phillips was held hostage by the pirates in a lifeboat for several days before being rescued by U.S. Navy SEALs.
